    Technical Characteristics of Spanish Marbles.
    Physical characteristics to be taken into account are: Density, Colour, Porosity, Compactness and Hardness.
    Chemical characteristics: Composition, Durability and Resistance agains agresive agents.
    Mechanical characteristics: by these we understant their resistance to different stresses.

      

    ABSORTION AND BULK SPECIFIC GRAVITY – UNE 22-182 Standard.

    At least three cubic probes of 7cm. long sides are inmersed in water form 48 hours. Coefficient of absortion (%) and bulk specific gravity (g/cm3) are calculated from the weight difference of dry and web probes.

    COMPRESSION STRENGTH – UNE 22-185 Standard.
    At least six wet cubic or cilindrical probes are subjected to increasing loads centered on two opposite faces, at a 0,49 to 0,98 MPa/s. rate, until breakage. Results in MPa are calculated from the average breaking loads of the probes.

    BENDING STRENGTH – UNE 22-186 Standard.
    At least six wet prismatic probes of 90x30x30mm. or 300x25x40 mm. are lean on two 200 mm. distant paralel brackets. Increasing loads are applied on opposite side by two paralell bars at 70 or 10 N/s. rate until breakage. Results in MPa are calculated from the average breaking loads.

    FROST RESISTANCE – UNE 22-184 Standard.
    At least three cubic probes of 7 cm long sides are dryed until constant weigth, then inmersed in water during 48 hours and subjected to 25 freeze/taw cycles, with maximun temperatures of 20º C. and minimun temperatures of -15º C. The frost resistance is calculated based on weight differences before and after frost cycles.
    Also, it is usual to compare compression strength of probes taken from the same rock, before and after frost resistance test.

    FRICTIONAL WEAR TEST – UNE 23-183, using 7x7x7 cm. samples, wearing them down at there sides against a circular rotating track with a larger of soaked carborundum at a fixed speed and for 1.000 m. Results are expressed in mm of wear.

    IMPACT TEST – UNE 22-189, using 20x20x3 cm. samples. A steel ball of about 7 kg is dropped several times increasing its hight 5 cm. each time. Results are expressed as cm wich sample breaks.

    PETROGRAFIC STUDIES
    By means of a petrographic study on a thin section of the material, the structure, texture, mineralogical composition, presence of altered or easily alterable minerals and the type of rock will be known.

    TECHNICAL CHARACTERIZATION
    Knowledge on the technical characteristics of marbles is basic to able determine the most adecuate use of the different varieties.
